Love
“I am a useless person,” Sulia expressed with thousand of regret as he continued; “I had failed to protect her.” He sobbed again. Sulia, a Sinhalese, a retired senior police officer was undergoing an interview by the Sri Lanka Live News, recapping the days under the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). He remembered how he lost his wife, house and property...

Some time ago; he had a happy family, a lovely wife and two children. They had no worry for basic necessities. Sulia had a stable job as a police officer. At that time, being a police officer was an easy job; they hardly had any cases to solve as the place they lived in was safe, but good things will never last.

Sri Lanka was a lovely island where beautiful beach was, also they had great amount of fresh delicious seafood. It was also known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Sri Lanka was once under the colony of the British. British colonial rule favoured the Tamil minority in terms of jobs and education. After being independent, a new government was being set up, it consisted mainly the Sinhalese. They introduced policies that only favoured their own race. The Tamils, who held the higher privilege during the British rule faced discrimination.

The first policy only granted citizenship to those who were born in Sri Lanka or those whose fathers and grandfathers were born here. Many Indian Tamil found themselves stateless. Sulia was then a teenage. This policy did not interrupt his life. He lived with no worry throughout his childhood.

The second policy also did not disturb Sulia in anyway. He had an easy admission into university. The university was no longer based on merit like it used o be. Instead, Tamil students had to score higher marks than Sinhalese students in order to enter the same university course. A fixed number of places were also reserved for Sinhalese.

Sulia met his wife during his school days. Dugar was an Indian; she had to work extra hard to get into the same university as Sulia. In addition, she was a girl. Ladies back then were not encourage to study. She took part time jobs. She worked in a tea plantation to earn her school fee. They married once they graduated. Their marriage was a hard one. Sulia’s parents did not agree to their marriage. They disapprove the couple to stay with them, and insisted they move out of the village.

Despite the bitter life, they bit their lips hard and live through. They were blessed with two lovely children.

Their blissful life could not carry on further, as the LTTE was formed to fight again the bias policies, everything started to change drastically. The lovely beach was turned into a blood field where innocent civilians are killed. The sea was no longer crystal blue however it was filled with a deep red colour. People hardly any food to eat.
The Indians were convinced by the LTTE to fight against the Sinhalese for their rights. This group encouraged violent against the unfairness. LTTE called in all male to fight, despite the age groups. Many Indians fled to other countries. As the recruitment was low, LTTE decided to take in Indian women. Dugar was an unlucky one. She was ordered by the LTTE to fight for their kind.

The Indian soldier ordered with loud tone. “Leave with me, now or never!” He pointed the gun at Dugar. Sulia had already took Jeya and her sister into hiding, afraid that the LTTE might catch their only child.

Dugar held her fist tight. She whispered loudly, “I’ll leave!”

This sentence sunk deep down Sulia’s heart. Dugar left and never came home. Everyone knew the outcome however Sulia assured himself that his wife would come home. He did not move his house despite it being destroyed many times. He continued to wait for her return...

childhood toy set

future occupation
When I was young, I enjoyed playing with my toy sets. Especially, the medical toy sets. I would spend hours sitting there “operating” my fellow patients. Sometimes, I even "operate" my pets. I made my rabbit lie flat on a homemade stretcher; take out my operation knife to cast a deep cut on it. Don’t worry; my rabbit is still happily alive

Moreover, I get some stripes of cloth and safety pins. I forced my pathetic hamsters to be my genie pig. After I bandaged my patients, I would carefully lift up them, and placed them in homemade wards. Then I will place name card written with their names, birth dates, NRIC numbers and some specific precautions at the side of the beds.

Time goes by; media start to grow as my age increase. I know my naive act when I was young can be a future occupation for me, which is NURSE. Once, I get very excited of being a nurse, I even tried my cousin's uniform. My cousin is a nurse in Institute of mental heath. Although the uniform is not the right gender neither the right size for me, but I enjoyed the moment when I stand in front of the mirror, turning left and right to get a good glance of my angel white uniform.
My cousin told me, to be a nurse I cannot have any phobia of blood. Well, I am perfectly fine with blood, I have zero phobia when comes to blood. Being a nurse must not be afraid of injection too. I considered again, I really dislike the injection on me; however, it is on patients’ body, I think I should be alright.

After doing many research through the internet. If I want to be a full time nurse, firstly I need to get 26 point or below for my o level. Then I have to take 3-year full-time diploma in nursing program.

There are also different types of nursing program, appointed to take care different cases. As for me, I would take up Pediatric Nursing; Children's nursing can cover cases from intensive care of a new-born baby with breathing problems to looking after a six-foot-tall teenager whose leg has been broken in a soccer match.

Many classmates said that they could not imagine me wearing pure white uniform, taking care of crying babies. I would probably give the babies a tight slap each. Is it true? I hope not.

Chinese New Year means a new start of a lunar calendar. It brings families together to celebrate this significant festival.

Highlight before the Chinese new year will be the lunar dinner, this is the time when families sit together to have a scrumptious dinner. Wahoo, this year I had my dinner in my uncle's house. Is time for me to get "angbao" (red packet).

Right early in the morning, I was wakened up by my anxious parent. I wore my precious clothes and leave my house. When I reach my uncle's house, I soon become an exhibition like a freak in the circus. Everyone started to crowd around me me, pinch my face, touch my hair and the worst thing is by my great aunt, she hit my butt! I fidget around with thousand of unwanted. After my nephews and niece arrive, they seems to forget me and start to crowd around them instead, I sigh with relieve.

After the crowd leave and start to cluster around my little nephew and niece, I sit down and chat with my cousin and his wife. I got an interesting discovery. Both of them were from the same secondary school, and same CCA, band which is same as me. My cousin-in-law played clarinet like me. She told me she was a section leader back then, and her section have more than 16 people while my school band section only have 6 after the sec 4 leave. Their love started since secondary school, and its amazing how their love can hold till this long. Isn't it fortunate?

I Can Make A Difference!

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation. Global warming mainly come from the action man did. For example deforestion, carbon dioxide from vehicals etc.

Earth is becoming hotter as the result of global warming, many parts of the world are suffering from disasters. Melting glaciers, early snowmelt and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages in the American West. Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding on the Eastern seaboard, in Florida, and in other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico. Warmer sea surface temperatures will fuel more intense hurricanes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Forests, farms and cities will face troublesome new pests and more mosquito-borne diseases. Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction.

We can help cut global warming pollution by just simple action from our daily lives. Reduce, reuse and recycle waste material is a great help. Reduce the amount and toxicity of trash you discard. Reuse containers and products; repair what is broken or give it to someone who can repair it. Recycle as much as possible, which includes buying products with recycled content.

For small action we can save the earth! I can make a difference!
